Why Martil's Beaches Stand Out

Martil is one of Morocco's best-kept coastal secrets. Sitting on the Mediterranean coast just 5 km from Tétouan, it boasts a long, clean sandy beach that stretches for several kilometres — far less crowded than the Atlantic resorts further south, and with calmer, warmer waters that make it ideal for swimming, especially in summer.

Unlike the more touristy beach towns, Martil retains an authentically Moroccan atmosphere. In July and August, it's a favourite escape for Moroccan families, filling the shorefront with life, music, and the smell of grilling seafood. Outside peak season, the beach becomes wonderfully peaceful.

The Main Martil Beach

The town's principal beach runs directly in front of the corniche — the lively promenade lined with cafés, juice bars, and restaurants. The beach here is:

  • Sandy and wide — plenty of space even on busy summer days
  • Calm and safe for swimming — the Mediterranean here is generally sheltered and gentle
  • Well-serviced — sun loungers and parasols are available to rent during summer
  • Family-friendly — shallow entry and lifeguard presence in peak season

The best stretch is near the centre of the corniche, where the beach is at its broadest and the facilities are most accessible.

The Martil Estuary & Wetlands

At the southern end of the beach, the Oued Martil river meets the sea, forming a small estuary and wetland area. This is a surprisingly rich natural environment and a reward for curious visitors who wander away from the main strip.

Birdwatchers will particularly enjoy this area — herons, egrets, and various wading birds are commonly spotted among the reeds and tidal mudflats. The estuary also creates a calm lagoon-like zone popular with younger children paddling in still, shallow water.

Cabo Negro & Nearby Beaches

Just 4 km north of Martil, Cabo Negro is a small, upscale resort cape with rocky outcrops, a marina, and a noticeably more exclusive feel. The beach here is smaller but beautifully scenic, framed by pine trees and villas. It's a great option if you want a quieter, more intimate beach experience.

Further up the coast, M'diq (about 8 km away) offers another long sandy beach with a lively beach club scene — worth a half-day trip if you want variety.

  5. Explore the estuary on foot — a short walk south of the main beach rewards you with nature and quiet.
